Privacy Policy
What SuperPinyin does — and doesn't do — with your information.
Who we are
SuperPinyin is made by Weila (registered name: Kartini) — referred to here as “we,” “us,” or “our.” SuperPinyin is a tool for reading Mandarin: it shows tone-marked pinyin above Chinese text, offers an offline dictionary, and lets you save and review words. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use it.
What stays on your device
Almost everything. The pinyin you read, the words you look up, the words you save, your flashcards, your copy history, and your settings are all stored locally on your device. They are never sent to us, and we have no way to see them.
When you tap Translate
Translation is the one feature that needs the internet. When you translate something, the text you selected is sent — over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection — to our translation server, and on to our translation provider, DeepSeek, which produces the translation and sends it back to your screen.
We use that text only to translate it, in the moment. It isn't tied to any identity (the app has none), and we don't store it on our server afterwards. As a sensible habit, please avoid translating anything you consider highly sensitive.
When you buy PRO
Purchases — the PRO subscription or the one-time lifetime unlock — are handled by Google Play. Your payment card details go to Google, never to us; we never see them.
To keep your PRO features unlocked (and to restore them if you reinstall), we use RevenueCat to manage your subscription status. RevenueCat identifies your purchases with a random, anonymous ID — not your name, email, or an account, because there isn't one. We can see things like which plan you have and whether it's currently active. That's all we need to keep PRO working, and all we receive.
What we don't do
- No accounts, sign-ups, or logins.
- No ads and no advertising networks.
- No analytics or tracking of how you use the app's features.
- No selling, renting, or trading your data — to anyone, ever.
- We don't collect your name, email, phone number, location, contacts, photos, or files.
Who we share data with
Only the two partners that make the online features work, and only for that purpose:
- DeepSeek — receives the text you choose to translate, to return a translation.
- RevenueCat and Google Play — manage your purchases and keep your PRO status in sync.
These partners act as service providers on our behalf. We don't share your information with advertisers or data brokers, because we don't work with any.
The permissions we ask for, and why
- Display over other apps — to float the bubble and the reading card over whatever app you're in.
- Foreground service & notification — to keep the bubble alive while you're using other apps (Android requires a small ongoing notification for this).
- Internet — used only by Translate and to check your PRO status.
- Run at startup — to bring your bubble back after a reboot, if you had it switched on.
- Ignore battery optimizations — so aggressive battery settings don't silently kill the bubble.
None of these permissions are used to gather information about you.
Keeping your data — and deleting it
Because your data lives on your device, you're in control of it:
- Delete individual saved words, or clear your copy history, right inside the app.
- Uninstall the app to remove everything at once — it all goes with it.
Records of your purchases are kept by Google Play and RevenueCat under their own policies, since they're needed for things like restoring a purchase or handling a refund.
Security
Anything that does travel over the network goes over encrypted HTTPS connections. Everything the app keeps on your device stays in your device's private app storage.
Children
SuperPinyin isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles your information, we'll update this page and the date below. Please check back now and then.
